Training & Maintaining Detection Dogs for Hire

Maximum Canine believes the key to any successful detection dog is found in its genetics, upbringing, and training. Because of this, our Maximum K9 Detection Service works with our Maximum Canine trainers to select the right dog.

Once the right dog’s chosen, our trainers and handlers start continuously shaping its behaviors to help it adapt to its environment and learn to perform in as many different scenarios as possible. This process allows us to know both our drug sniffing and bomb sniffing dogs inside and out, which means we can make necessary adjustments to their programs. Our handlers have a strong bond with their dogs that is maintained through constant training.

Both the explosives dog and narcotics dog training programs begin with lots of socialization in various environments so the dog is comfortable around lots of environmental stimuli. We work on obedience to odors and the channeling of natural hunt drives using operant conditioning (also known as instrumental conditioning) and positive reinforcement. These methods create an addictive K9 that truly enjoys its job.

We do NOT cross train our dogs. A dog is either trained only to detect explosives or only to detect narcotics, but not any combination of the two. Dogs are trained in a passive indication to alert to present odors without disturbing them.

All of our teams are required to maintain proficiency on the required odors and attend weekly training sessions in a variety of simulated scenarios experiencing different environments and distractions.Teams will also periodically attend seminars and conferences and train with other handlers and organizations. We believe that integration with other trainers and handlers is vital to broaden the K9 detection industry.

Detection teams are certified within Maximum K9 Detection Services quarterly and are certified annually via accredited, third-party affiliates.
